Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport

Accessible Travel & Step-Free Public Transport in Australia

Verified information on wheelchair accessible stops, level-boarding metro trains, low-floor trams, tactile ground indicators, and National Companion Card acceptance.

Step-Free Station Access

All stations and platforms marked with the accessible icon feature lift or ramp access from street level directly to the platform concourse. Sydney Metro and Canberra Light Rail are 100% step-free across all stations.

Companion Card Program

All Australian public transport networks recognise the National Companion Card. When an eligible person with a disability purchases a concession ticket or taps their transit card, their attendant or companion travels completely free of charge.

Assistance Dogs & Guide Dogs

Accredited assistance animals, guide dogs, and hearing dogs are legally permitted to travel on all public transport services across Australia, including buses, trains, trams, ferries, and regional rail coaches.

Accessibility Features by Australian Jurisdiction

New South Wales (Sydney Trains & Metro)

Sydney Metro (Tallawong to Sydenham) features level boarding with platform screen doors: zero gap between train and platform. On Sydney Trains double-deck sets, boarding ramps are deployed by station staff at the first car for wheelchair and mobility scooter users.

Victoria (Metro Trains & Yarra Trams)

Yarra Trams operates low-floor E-Class and D-Class trams on major routes (96, 109, 86, 19, 58) with dedicated level boarding platform stops. High-floor historic trams on routes without platform stops require steps to board.

Queensland (Translink & G:link)

The Gold Coast G:link tram and Brisbane Busway stations offer full level boarding. Translink buses feature kneeling suspension and retractable boarding ramps. Assisted boarding is provided on Queensland Rail Citytrain networks.

Australian Capital Territory (Canberra Metro)

All 14 light rail stops on the Canberra Metro network (Alinga St to Gungahlin Place) feature level boarding, audio-tactile buttons, and hearing loops. ACTION buses operate low-floor wheelchair accessible vehicles.
